Kenna Phillips is a vocalist and singing instructor based in beautiful Missoula, MT. She earned her Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Montana. Prior to grad school, Kenna completed her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, also at the University of Montana.
As a graduate student, Kenna was awarded the Voice Area Graduate Teaching Assistantship for both years. As the Graduate Teaching Assistant, Kenna was responsible for providing applied voice lessons to university students ranging from music minors to music education majors to vocal performance majors. She taught students of multiple skill levels, cultivating sustainable singing technique and emotive artistry in each of them. As per the requirements of these lesson credits, she coached every student through preparing several songs to be presented to the voice faculty at the end of the semester, providing them with real-life performing experience and feedback.
Also included in her duties as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, Kenna taught a class on voice techniques for a semester. This class was mostly comprised of music education majors, and she instructed them on the basics of vocal function, technique, pedagogy, and expression, empowering those students to functionally teach basic vocal technique in their careers.
During both her graduate and undergraduate degrees, Kenna studied under Anne Basinski, from whom she learned how to practically apply vocal exercises to obtain free, unhindered singing for herself and her students. During her time at the University of Montana, Kenna focused mostly on soprano opera & art song repertoire, with occasional detours into jazz, pop, and musical theater.
Throughout her years at the University of Montana, Kenna performed extensively with the UM Chamber Chorale and UM Opera Theater programs. Besides performing over a dozen individual opera and musical theater scenes with UM Opera Theater, Kenna has played the role of Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute (pictured left, 2024) and, most recently, the role of Cherubino in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro (pictured right, 2026). She has also performed with the UM Symphony Orchestra, most notably after she won the University's annual Concerto/Aria competition in 2025.
While at the University of Montana, Kenna took an interest in music composition. She studied this art under Dr. Bryan Kurt Kostors, writing works for piano, chamber ensemble, choir, solo voice, and more. Kenna's knowledge of composition-related topics has enabled her to dive more deeply into the musical aspects of performance repertoire, both for herself and her students, enhancing artistic expression and connection.
